    What is bāl–sādhu dīkshā,

    5 months ago 79

In Jain Dharma, bāl–sādhu dīkshā (often simply called bāl dīkshā or bāl–dikshā) means:

    > A child taking full Jain monastic initiation, becoming a sadhu (monk) or sādhvī (nun) at a young age.

    Very simple explanation:

    1. “Bāl” = child, “sādhu” = monk, “dīkshā” = initiation

    - So bāl–sādhu dīkshā is when a minor / child is formally initiated as a Jain monk or nun.

    1. What happens in bāl–sādhu dīkshā (in principle the same as normal dīkshā)

The child: - Renounces family life, property, comforts, future career, marriage etc. - Accepts mahāvrat (5 great vows): ahimsā, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha. - Lives under the guidance of ācārya / guru, follows strict rules of food, travel, discipline, study and meditation.

    1. Digambar and Śvetāmbara view (basic idea)

    - Both traditions accept that monastic life = dīkshā, and when a child is initiated, that becomes bāl–sādhu dīkshā. - Age, process and strictness can differ between sects and sub-sects; some groups are more cautious or do not encourage very early age dīkshā, while others may allow it if guru and family agree.

    1. Scriptural spirit

    - In Jain śāstra, dīkshā is meant for a person who can understand the vows, bear hardships, and take conscious, firm decision for moksha-mārga. - Therefore, even when bāl–sādhu dīkshā happens, the ideal remains: right understanding + right faith + capacity for discipline.

If you wanted to ask about the dress code, ritual steps, or whether it is advisable for children, those are slightly different but related topics that can be explained separately.
