    Great jain characters

    5 months ago 107

Here are some of the great Jain characters (mahān Jain puruṣh) usually remembered in Jain tradition. I’ll keep them very short and simple:

    1. 24 Tirthankar Bhagwans

Especially well‑known: - Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath) – First Tirthankar, taught basic civilisation (farming, arts, etc.). - Bhagwan Parshvanath – 23rd Tirthankar, taught 4 vows (chār vrata). - Bhagwan Mahavir Swami – 24th Tirthankar, gave the present form of Jain dharma.

    1. Ganadhars (Chief Disciples)

    - Gautam Swami – Main disciple of Bhagwan Mahavir, ideal of śraddhā (faith) and vinay (humility). - Sudharma Swami – Preserver of Jain scriptures after nirvāṇa of Mahavir. - Indrabhuti Gautam, Agnibhuti, Vayubhuti, Metarya, Prabhasa, etc. – Eleven main Ganadhars of Mahavir.

    1. Great Acharyas and Ācāryas

(Names differ slightly in Digambar / Shvetambar lists, but all are highly respected.) - Āchārya Bhadrabahu – Last knower of complete Jain canon in early time. - Āchārya Kundkund (Digambar) – Great philosopher; wrote Samayasāra, Pravachansāra, etc. - Āchārya Haribhadra Suri (Shvetambar) – Great scholar, wrote many granths, very broad‑minded. - Āchārya Hemchandra Suri (Shvetambar) – “Kalikal Sarvagna”, master scholar; guided King Kumarpal. - Āchārya Vidyanand, Āchārya Shantisagar (Digambar) – Modern time Digambar acharyas of great tapas and scholarship.

    1. Great Shravaks (Householders)

    - Shravak Anand Shravak, Shalibhadra, Dhanna Shravak – Ideals of charity, detachment, and faith in Jain stories. - King Kumarpal (Shvetambar tradition) – Powerful king who protected and spread Jain dharma under guidance of Hemchandra. - King Kharavela (ancient) – Odisha king known from inscriptions, supporter of Jainism.

    1. Great Shravikas (Women Devotees)

    - Chandanbala – First chief lady disciple (gaṇinī) of Mahavir; ideal of patience and forgiveness. - Rani Chelna, Rani Mrigavati, Rani Prabhavati – Queens famous for strong faith (śraddhā) and courage.

    1. Great Jain Thinkers & Saints of Recent Times

(Not Tirthankars, but very influential for sādhanā and literature.) - Shrimad Rajchandra – Author of Ātmasiddhi Śāstra, emphasised self‑realisation and inner purity. - Kanjiswami (Kanji Swami, Digambar tradition) – Spread deep understanding of Kundkund’s philosophy to common people. - Vallabh Suri, Vijay Vallabh Suri, Anand Rishi ji, Tulsi ji Maharaj, Mahapragya ji, etc. – Many 20th‑century Jain saints who focused on education, non‑violence, and anuvrat.

    1. Examples of Ideal Roles

Jain texts generally group great characters into: - Tirthankars – Perfect teachers. - Ganadhars – First listeners and preservers of the teaching. - Acharyas / Upadhyayas / Sadhus – Spiritual leaders and monks. - Shravaks & Shravikas – Ideal householders living Jain principles in daily life.

If you want, I can next give:

    • only stories of 3–4 great characters (for children or beginners), or
    • a separate list for Digambar and Shvetambar traditions with a little more detail.
