    why are periods tabooed

    5 months ago 89

In Jainism, periods (menstruation) themselves are not considered a sin or something shameful. The “taboo” around them mainly comes from older ideas of ritual purity (shuddhi / ashaucha) and cultural habits, not from the belief that a woman is bad or spiritually low.

Here is the Jain perspective in simple points:

    1. Natural, not sinful

    - Menstruation is understood as a natural bodily process, like other bodily discharges. - Jain Dharma does not say that a woman’s soul becomes impure or sinful during periods. The soul always remains spiritually pure. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Why restrictions were placed (traditional view)

Older Jain ācāra (conduct) traditions treated menstruation as a time of ritual non‑fitness (ashaucha), mainly for: - Temple / idol activities – touching murtis, doing abhiṣek, entering the inner sanctum, handling puja items and scriptures. ( jainknowledge.com) - This was linked to: - Need for very high cleanliness for idol‑centric worship. - Ahimsa: all bodily fluids (blood, etc.) are seen as carrying countless microscopic beings, so extra care is taken to avoid harm during sacred rituals. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Home and personal life

    - Many customs (separate sleeping, not cooking/serving, not touching others much) are mostly social/cultural, not strict scriptural orders. - These practices differ widely by family, region, and sect (Digambar / Śvetāmbara). There is no single uniform Jain rule that “you cannot touch anything on periods.” ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. What is allowed spiritually

During periods, a woman can still: - Do bhāva‑pūjā (mental worship) - Recite Navkār Mantra, listen to pravachan - Do svādhyāy (study by listening/reading, as per family achar) - Practice samayik, meditation, and general dharmic activities that do not require strict idol/temple contact. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Modern Jain understanding

    - Many modern Jains see periods simply as biological and oppose shame or stigma. - They keep the focus on inner purity, right intention (bhāva), and ahimsa, rather than on fear or taboos. ( jainknowledge.com)

So, periods are “tabooed” mostly because of old ritual‑purity rules and cultural habits, not because Jain Dharma considers a menstruating woman spiritually inferior. The key Jain teaching is:

    • Soul is always equal and pure; rules around menstruation are temporary, external, and mainly for ritual discipline and ahimsa.
