In Varshitap brahmacharya to be followed for 13 months

    5 months ago 93

In Varshitap, yes — brahmacharya should be observed for the entire 13 months (13 lunar months + 13 days) as far as possible.

    Very simply:

    1. What is expected during Varshitap?

    - It is a mahā-tap (very high austerity). - Along with fasting on alternate days, you are expected to keep your conduct very pure. - That includes strict brahmacharya (celibacy).

    1. For a married śrāvaka/śrāvikā (lay follower):

During the whole Varshitap period, you should: - Not have any sexual relation, even with your spouse. - Avoid romantic/erotic talks, jokes, messages, or touching done with sensual intention. - Avoid watching/reading anything that excites sexual passion. - As far as possible, keep separate sleeping arrangements or at least clear inner resolve of celibacy.

    1. Why so strict?

    - Purpose of Varshitap is kāṣāya-kṣaya – reducing anger, pride, deceit, greed, and all sensual attachment. - Sex strongly disturbs samyak-bhāva (pure state of mind), so it goes directly against the aim of the tap.

    1. Both traditions:

    - Digambar and Śvetāmbara both agree: For any serious tap like Varshitap, brahmacharya is to be kept as if you are a monk/nun for that period, as much as your capacity allows and as instructed by your guru.

    1. If you feel weak or unsure:

    - Take a clear vow (saṅkalpa) of brahmacharya at the start of Varshitap in presence of a guru or senior. - If needed, discuss your situation openly with your Jain guru; never lower the standard by self‑permission.

So, in summary: Yes, during Varshitap, the correct and ideal practice is complete brahmacharya for the full 13 months.
