In Varshitap vidhi brahmacharya to be followed for 13 months
For Varshitap (Varshi Tap), brahmacharya for the full 13 months is very important. In simple words:
1. What “brahmacharya” means during Varshitap
For a shravak/shravika doing Varshitap, brahmacharya should be observed as strictly as possible, like this:
- No sexual activity at all
- No sex, even with your own husband/wife. - No physical actions done for sexual pleasure (self or with others). ( jainknowledge.com)
- Control of mind, speech and body
- Do not watch, read or listen to things that create sexual desire. - Do not talk in a vulgar or romantic way that increases passion (kaam-bhaav). - Avoid places, people, and situations that easily disturb celibacy.
- Sleeping and living arrangements
- As far as possible, separate sleeping place from spouse. - Keep simple bed, simple clothes; avoid touches that create sensual feelings. - Maintain distance and modesty with everyone, not only opposite gender.
- Diet and daily routine supporting celibacy
- Simple, light food only on bhojan days (as per Varshitap niyam), no刺激 for senses. ( jainknowledge.com) - Regular Samayik, Pratikraman, Swadhyay, Jap to keep the mind pure. ( jainknowledge.com) - Less talking, more dhyan and paath – this naturally supports brahmacharya.

2. Why brahmacharya is compulsory in Varshitap
- All tapasya in Jain dharma is to reduce kashayas (anger, pride, deceit, greed) and vishayas (sense pleasures).
- Sexual enjoyment is a strong vishaya, so if it continues, the spiritual fruit of such a big tapa like Varshitap gets heavily reduced. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions agree:
---
3. Simple brahmacharya-vrata for 13 months (practical points)
You can think of taking this kind of sankalp for the whole Varshitap period:
- _“I will keep complete celibacy (no sexual act, no deliberate sexual thought or imagination).”_
- _“I will not see, hear, read or speak anything that disturbs my brahmacharya.”_
- _“I will keep separate bedding and maintain modesty in touch and behaviour.”_
- _“I will daily do at least one Samayik / Pratikraman, and some Navkar mantra jaap for inner purity.”_
- _“If any lapse happens even in mind, I will do prayaschitta (repentance) the same day.”_
---
4. Small difference in traditions (Digambar / Shwetambar)
- Shwetambar:
- Digambar:
Essence in both: without brahmacharya, Varshitap is incomplete.

If you plan to take this vrata, please take margdarshan and agya from your own Guru / Acharya / Pravachankar. They will fix exact niyam (e.g., separate bedding, type of clothing, talking limits, etc.) according to your situation and health.
