why is physical intimacy a taboo

    5 months ago 109

In Jainism, physical intimacy is not “bad” by itself, but it is seen as spiritually very powerful and very binding, so it is treated with great caution and modesty. That is why it often feels like a taboo topic.

Here is the Jain view in simple points:

    1. It increases attachment (rāga)

    • The main goal in Jain Dharma is to reduce attachment and hatred (rāga–dveṣa) so the soul can become free.
    • Physical intimacy strongly increases emotional and bodily attachment:
    - “This is my partner, my pleasure, my body.”
    • This deepens the feeling of “I” and “mine,” which keeps the soul in bondage.

    2. It excites passions (kaṣāyas)

    • Intimacy is closely connected with:
    - Desire - Jealousy - Anger - Pride - Greed
    • These are called kaṣāyas (passions), and they attract heavy karmas.
    • Because it easily provokes strong emotions, scriptures tell us to be very careful and restrained.

    3. It strengthens identification with the body

    • Jainism teaches that you are the soul, not the body.
    • Physical pleasure makes us feel:
    - “I am this body” - “My happiness = my body’s comfort”
    • This is opposite to the path of detachment and self-realization.

    4. For monks and nuns: complete taboo

    • For muni and āryikā (Digambar) or sādhus and sādhvīs (Śvetāmbara):
    - Any physical intimacy is completely forbidden. - They take the vow of absolute brahmacharya (celibacy).
    • Reason:
    - Their life aim is only moksha (liberation). - Even small sensual indulgence can break their inner purity and focus.

    5. For householders: allowed but limited

    For śrāvaks and śrāvikās (householders):

    • Intimacy within marriage is accepted as a natural part of life.
    • But Jain Dharma gives clear guidance:
    - Be faithful to one partner. - Avoid excess, addiction, or obsession. - Use it with responsibility and restraint, not as the center of life.
    • Outside marriage, or harmful, exploitative, or forceful intimacy is considered sinful (pāp).

So, it is not just “taboo” for cultural reasons, but because:

    1. It binds heavy karmas through passion.
    2. It deepens attachment to people and body.
    3. It pulls the mind outward, away from self-realization and spiritual practice.

    6. Modesty and silence around the topic

    • Jain culture also emphasizes lajjā (modesty).
    • Therefore, such topics are usually:
    - Spoken of with respect and care. - Not discussed openly or crudely.
    • This cultural modesty also makes it feel like a taboo.

In summary: Physical intimacy is powerful. Jainism respects that power but warns that if it is uncontrolled or misused, it becomes a big obstacle on the spiritual path. For monks and nuns, it is completely renounced; for householders, it is allowed in a limited, responsible, and dharmic way.
