Gotra with kuldevi
In Jain context, these are two different things:
- Gotra (गोत्र)
- Gotra means family lineage / clan name. - It is used mainly for: - knowing one’s ancestral line, - avoiding marriage within close blood‑relations, - identifying community (e.g. Oswal, Khandelwal, Porwal, etc. with their internal gotras). - Gotra is social–family identity, not directly a spiritual concept in Jain philosophy. - Spiritually, Jain dharma focuses on jīva (soul), not on gotra, caste or birth.
- Kuldevi (कुलदेवी)
- Kuldevi means the family’s protective goddess, traditionally worshipped by one kul (extended family / clan). - Among many Jain communities (especially in Rajasthan & Gujarat), people also worship a kuldevi in a cultural way – often a Jain yakshini (e.g. Chakreshwari, Padmavati, Ambika, Jwalamalini, etc.) or sometimes a local śakti‑devī shared with non‑Jains. - This practice is community‑custom, not a compulsory Jain religious rule. - Core Jain worship is to Arihant, Siddha, Āchārya, Upādhyāya, Sādhu (Panch Parmesthi). Kuldevi‑puja, if done, should never replace this; at most it is secondary and optional.

“Gotra with Kuldevi” – is there a fixed list?
- Different jāti / samāj (Oswal, Khandelwal, Shrimal, Porwal, etc.) have made their own lists:
- These lists are not part of Agam or Jain Āchārya‑granthas; they are social records, often varying by region and family.
- So there is no single, universally correct “Jain gotra–kuldevi table” accepted by all Jains.
If you want to know your own gotra–kuldevi:
- Ask within your family first
- Grandparents / elders - Old marriage cards, kul‑vṛttānt, family diaries - They often know both: “hamārā gotra yeh hai, hamārī kuldevi yeh hai.”
- Ask your local Jain sangh / samaj office
- Many sanghs keep community books listing gotra, original village, kuldevi. - Especially for Oswal / Khandelwal / Porwal type communities.
- Remember the Jain view
- Whether you know your kuldevi or not, your real spiritual refuge is - Namokar Mantra, - Jinendra DHyān, - Right faith, right knowledge, right conduct. - Gotra & kuldevi are helpful for social identity, but moksha depends only on your own shubh–aśubh karmas and self‑effort, not on birth‑gotra or kuldevi.
If you tell me your community (Oswal / Khandelwal / Porwal etc.) and your gotra name, I can guide you how such things are usually traced in Jain families, and how to keep the practice aligned with Jain principles.
