    Who no potato

    5 months ago 100

It sounds like you are asking: “Why no potato in Jainism?” (why Jains don’t eat potato).

In Jain Dharma, potato is not allowed because it is a root vegetable (kand‑mool). Root vegetables are avoided for these main reasons:

    1. Entire plant is killed

    - When a potato is taken out, the whole plant is uprooted. - This destroys the main plant and also disturbs many lives in the soil.

    1. Countless tiny lives (anantkāy / nigod jiv)

    - Roots like potato are believed to contain many subtle living beings. - Cutting, washing, and cooking them kills a very large number of these tiny jivas.

    1. More himsā (violence) compared to other vegetables

    - Plucking fruits or above‑ground vegetables usually does not kill the whole plant. - Uprooting roots always involves more injury to life, so Jains avoid them to follow ahimsā more strictly.

    1. Same rule for all roots

    - Not only potato, but onion, garlic, carrot, beetroot, radish, sweet potato, ginger, turmeric, etc. are also avoided for the same reason.

This principle is accepted in both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions. Some households are stricter, some a little softer, but the basic rule “no root vegetables, including potato” is common in Jain Dharma.

You can read more in a simple Q&A style here and a list of such vegetables here .
