Gupta is not an exclusive Jain surname, but some Jain families do have the surname Gupta.

• The surname Gupta is used in many communities in India (mainly Hindu, but also some Jain, Buddhist, etc.).
• In Jainism, there is no fixed or mandatory “Jain-only” surname. A person can be Jain by religion and still have any family surname like Gupta, Shah, Jain, Soni, etc.
• So:

- All people with surname Gupta are not Jain. - But a person with surname Gupta can be Jain, depending on their family and tradition.

In Jain Dharma, what matters is right faith, right knowledge and right conduct (samyak darshan–jnan–charitra), not the surname.
