bharatshetra in jumbudweep
In Jain dharma, Bharat Kshetra is a special region inside Jambudweep (the central continent of the universe in Madhya Lok).
Very simply:
- Jambudweep = main central continent where human beings live and can do spiritual practice and get moksha.
- Inside Jambudweep there are different regions (kshetras).
- Bharat Kshetra is one of these regions and is in the southern part of Jambudweep.
- According to Jain belief, we are living in Bharat Kshetra right now. Our present India and surrounding area are said to lie within this Bharat Kshetra (in a spiritual/cosmological sense, not exact modern map).
Important points about Bharat Kshetra:
- It is a karmabhumi – a land where:
- In traditional description, Bharat Kshetra is divided into 6 khands (regions), one of which is Ārya-khand, where dharma is more prominent.
- Digambar and Shwetambar both accept Bharat Kshetra as one kshetra in the south of Jambudweep and as a karmabhumi.
