how did king bharat become kevali ?

    5 months ago 95

According to Jain tradition, King Bharat (Bharat Chakravarti), son of Bhagwan Rishabhdev, became Kevali (omniscient) through deep inner detachment (vairāgya), not through any external miracle.

In short, the traditional story goes like this:

    • Bharat ruled as a Chakravarti (universal emperor) and had great power, wealth, and glory.
    • One day, while in his private dressing room, he removed his rings, crown and ornaments and looked at himself in the mirror.
    • He realized:
    - “I feel impressive only because of these ornaments. - The body itself is made of blood, bones, etc., and will one day decay. - None of this – kingdom, wealth, body – is truly mine or permanent. - The only eternal reality is the soul (ātma). Why am I attached to what will perish?”
    • This intense reflection created true, complete detachment from body, power, and possessions.
    • At that very moment, due to this perfect purity of inner vision and the destruction of all ghāti karmas (knowledge‑obscuring, perception‑obscuring, deluding and obstructing karmas), he attained Keval‑jñān (omniscience) right there in that room and became a Kevali. ( jainknowledge.com)

After becoming Kevali, like all Kevalis, he lived the rest of his life in perfect knowledge and then, when his remaining aghāti karmas (body‑related karmas) finished, his soul attained moksha (liberation).

On this point, both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions agree on the main essence:

    • Bharat was a Chakravarti,
    • he developed intense vairāgya,
    • his ghāti karmas were destroyed,
    • and he attained Keval‑jñān through inner purification, not by any external favor.
