    Bhadrabahu Swami story

    one year ago 836

Bhadrabahu Swami is a highly revered figure in Jainism, especially within the Digambara tradition. He was the last Shrut Kevali, meaning the last Jain Acharya to have complete knowledge of the Jain scriptures (Angas). Here is a summary of his story according to Jain tradition:

Early Life and Achievements: Bhadrabahu Swami was born in Pundravardhana (present-day Bengal). He became a Jain monk and achieved great mastery over the Jain scriptures and spiritual practices. He is renowned for his scholarship and for guiding the Jain community through crucial periods.

The Great Famine and Division: During Bhadrabahu's leadership, a severe 12-year famine struck in the region of Magadha (present-day Bihar). To protect the Jain community and ensure the continuity of spiritual practices, Bhadrabahu Swami led a large group of monks and lay followers to South India, specifically to Shravanabelagola in present-day Karnataka. Chandragupta Maurya, the great emperor who had become a Jain monk, is said to have accompanied him.

Meanwhile, another group of Jain monks remained in the North under the leadership of Sthulabhadra. Over time, differences in practice and dress (nakedness vs. wearing white robes) emerged between the two groups. This eventually led to the formation of two main sects of Jainism: Digambara (those who remained with Bhadrabahu in the South) and Svetambara (those who stayed in the North).

Bhadrabahu’s Later Life: According to tradition, Bhadrabahu performed deep meditation at the cave in Shravanabelagola (now called Bhadrabahu Cave). He ultimately attained Samadhi and keval jnana (omniscience) there.

Legacy: Bhadrabahu Swami is remembered for his immense knowledge, spiritual discipline, and for playing a pivotal role in preserving Jain teachings during a time of crisis. His journey to the South and his association with Chandragupta Maurya are important episodes in Jain history, especially for the Digambara sect.

Cultural Significance: The story of Bhadrabahu Swami is commemorated by Jains, particularly at Shravanabelagola, which remains a major pilgrimage site. His memory inspires spiritual discipline, scriptural study, and unity among followers of Jainism.
