what is the Digambar opinion of the purvas

    5 months ago 94

In Digambar tradition, the main points about the Pūrvās are:

    1. What the Pūrvās are

    - The 14 Pūrvās were the earliest and deepest Jain scriptures, contained inside the 12th Aṅga “Dṛṣṭivāda”. - They included very detailed knowledge of jīva–ajīva, karma, anekāntvāda, spiritual practice, yogic powers, etc.

    1. Their present status (Digambar view)

    - All 14 Pūrvās are completely lost. - Not only the Pūrvās, but the entire original 12 Aṅgas are considered lost in the Digambar tradition. - Āchārya Bhūtabali is held to be the last muni who had even partial knowledge of the original scripture. After him, the Aṅgas and Pūrvās disappeared from human memory.

    1. Can they be written now?

    - Digambar ācāryas clearly say: - 11 Aṅgas and 14 Pūrvās cannot be written down again. - Whatever we have today are later śāstras, based on the essence and fragments remembered and realized by great ācāryas, not re‑written Aṅgas or Pūrvās themselves.

    1. Relation to main Digambar scriptures

    - Texts like Ṣaṭkhaṅḍāgama and Kaṣāyapāhuḍa are believed to be written on the basis of whatever was preserved from the Pūrvās (especially the karma‑related parts), through the lineage of ācāryas such as Dharasena, Puṣpadanta, Bhūtabali, etc. - These are therefore authoritative in Digambar tradition, but they are not called “Pūrvās” or “Aṅgas”; they are new compositions preserving the doctrine.

    1. Difference from Śvetāmbara view (only in brief)

    - Both sects agree: Pūrvās are lost. - The Digambar position goes further and says: - The whole Aṅga–Pūrvā canon is lost, - So the Śvetāmbara Aṅgas written later are not accepted as original scriptures.

In simple words: For Digambaras, Pūrvās really existed, were extremely vast and deep, but are now totally extinct; only their essence lives on indirectly in later Digambar texts. No one today possesses or can recreate the actual 14 Pūrvās.
