isnt just being alive harming microorganisms

    5 months ago 118

In Jainism, yes — simply being alive as an embodied soul means some harm to microorganisms is unavoidable.

A few key points in very simple terms:

    1. Every activity involves some himsā (violence)

    - Walking, breathing, eating, bathing, even sitting down can harm tiny beings (microorganisms, insects, etc.). - Scriptures clearly accept that a householder (shravak/shravika) cannot avoid all violence.

    1. Jain Dharma distinguishes types of violence

    - Saṅkalpi-himsā: intentional, passion-driven harm (for taste, anger, greed, etc.) – this is strongly condemned. - Arambhi / unavoidable himsā: harm that happens as part of necessary living – allowed for householders, but should be minimized and done with awareness and remorse.

    1. Goal is not “zero harm” but “minimum possible harm”

    - This is why Jains: - Filter/boil water to reduce life they ingest. ( jainknowledge.com) - Avoid roots, mushrooms, many leafy greens, etc., because they involve more killing of tiny beings. ( jainknowledge.com) - Avoid eating at night, when countless small beings are more active and invisible. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Boiling / cleaning also involves violence

    - Jain texts and teachers openly say: killing microorganisms by boiling water is violence – but it may be less violence than constantly swallowing many living beings in raw/dirty water. ( jainknowledge.com) - So the path is: choose the option that reduces total harm, accept that some violence occurred, and cultivate humility and pratikraman (repentance).

    1. Essence from a Jain view

    - As long as we have a body and live in saṁsār, absolute non-violence is impossible. - The ideal (like a Kevali or very strict sadhu) is complete non-harm, but for us, Dharma is: > Live as carefully as you can, > avoid deliberate cruelty, > and steadily reduce the harm you cause.
