• A Tirthankar is a perfectly enlightened soul who:

- Destroys all inner enemies (anger, ego, deceit, greed). - Attains Keval Jnan (perfect knowledge). - Shows the path of liberation (moksha) to others. - Establishes the fourfold sangh – monks, nuns, shravaks, shravikas.

• The word comes from:

- “Tirtha” = ford, crossing place. - “Kara” = maker. - So, a Tirthankar is a “ford‑maker” – one who creates a crossing over the ocean of birth and death for others.

• In our current time cycle, there are 24 Tirthankars, from Adinath (Rishabhdev) to Mahavir Swami.
