    When to say padikamami nindami

    5 months ago 81

“Padikkamāmi, nindāmi” (often with full line “Padikkamāmi, nindāmi, garihāmi, appāṇaṁ vosirāmi”) is said:

    1. In Karemi Bhante Sūtra

    - This sutra is recited when you formally take the vow of Samayik. - In Shwetāmbara tradition it comes near the end of Karemi Bhante, after “na karemi, na kāravemi …” - So whenever you start Samayik (daily, Pakshik, Chaumāsik, Samvatsari), and Karemi Bhante is recited, you also say “Padikkamāmi, nindāmi…”

    1. During Pratikraman

    - Before doing detailed Pratikraman, Samayik is first taken, again with Karemi Bhante. - So in Raisi, Devasi, Pakshik, Chaumāsik and Samvatsari Pratikraman, whenever the Samayik‑vow sutra (Karemi Bhante) is recited, “Padikkamāmi, nindāmi…” is also recited.

    1. What it means (very simply)

    - Padikkamāmi – I do pratikraman / I repent and turn back from my faults. - Nindāmi – I condemn / blame my own wrong actions, I do not support them. - (Full line) garihāmi, appāṇaṁ vosirāmi – I further censure those sins and resolve to separate my soul from them.

So: You say “Padikkamāmi, nindāmi …” whenever you are taking Samayik through Karemi Bhante Sūtra, usually at the start of Samayik and Pratikraman, as an expression of repentance and a vow not to repeat sins.
