    why jains do business

    5 months ago 158

Many people feel that “all Jains do business”. Of course this is not 100% true, but it is true that a very large number of Jains choose business, trade and finance. From a Jain‑dharma point of view, the reasons are quite simple:

    1. Dharmic reason – less himsā (violence)

    - For a śrāvak (lay Jain), the rule is: choose a profession that causes the least possible violence to living beings. - Professions like butchery, fishing, meat trade, weapons, alcohol, etc. are clearly against Jain principles. - Even farming was traditionally considered very violent, because it kills countless tiny beings in the soil. - So historically, Jains moved towards vyāpār (business/trade) where, compared to many other jobs, direct physical violence to jīvas is less, and can be minimized by careful choices (e.g. textiles, diamonds, finance, shops, etc.).

    1. Freedom to follow vows (vratas)

    - A businessperson usually has more control over: - working hours (for pūjā, sāmāyik, pratikraman) - type of products they deal in (can avoid violent items) - holidays for Paryushan, Ayambil oli, etc. - As an employee in some fields, it can be harder to say “no” to unethical work or to take time off for religious practices. - So business gives independence to live closer to Jain ethics.

    1. Support for dāna and samāj sewa

    - Jain dharma praises dāna (charity) done with right bhāv (intention). - Temples, pathshalas, gaushalas, charities, hospitals, hostels, etc. often need financial support. - Successful Jain business families have traditionally used their wealth to support such religious and social activities. - So business becomes a way to earn in a right way and then use it in a right way.

    1. Culture and tradition

    - For many Jain families, business has been done for generations. - Children grow up seeing parents, uncles, grandparents in trade, so they naturally learn those skills. - Community networks (trust, honesty, simple living) also make it easier to do business together.

    1. But business also has strict limits in Jainism

    - Jain scriptures clearly say: even in business, avoid: - violence (himsā) - cheating and lying (asatya) - stealing or unfair advantage (asteya) - greed and hoarding (aparigraha) - So the ideal Jain businessman/woman tries to keep: - honesty in accounts - fair treatment of workers - clean products (no obvious violence) - modest personal lifestyle, even if the business is big.

So, Jains do business mainly because it fits best with the layperson’s Jain principles when done properly: less direct violence, more independence to practice dharma, and more ability to do dāna and help others.
