Darshan vidhi in temple
In Jainism, Darshan Vidhi refers to the prescribed method or procedure for respectfully visiting a Jain temple (Derasar) and performing the sacred act of darshan (viewing and venerating the Tirthankara images). The purpose of this ritual is to cultivate devotion, humility, and purity of mind.
General Steps of Darshan Vidhi in a Jain Temple:
- Purity and Preparation:
- Bathe and wear clean, modest clothes before entering the temple. - Maintain silence, humility, and a peaceful mind.
- Entering the Temple:
- Enter with a sense of reverence, preferably barefoot. - Do not carry leather items inside.
- Chanting and Bowing:
- Upon entering, recite the Navkar Mantra or other Jain prayers. - Bow to the Tirthankara idols, touching your head to the ground in the “Panchang Namaskar” (five-point prostration).
- Circumambulation (Pradakshina):
- Walk clockwise around the main idol or garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) three times, keeping the idol on your right side. - Do not turn your back directly toward the idols after darshan.
- Offering and Worship:
- Offer rice grains, flowers, saffron, or sandalwood powder (as per temple customs). - Perform abhishek (ritual bathing of the idol) if permitted and according to tradition. - Light a lamp or incense as a symbol of spiritual enlightenment.
- Prayer and Contemplation:
- Stand or sit in front of the idol, recite prayers such as the Navkar Mantra, Khamasaman, or Bhaktamar Stotra. - Meditate on the virtues of the Tirthankaras and reflect on self-purification.
- Exit Ritual:
- Bow again in gratitude before leaving. - Exit the temple quietly and respectfully.
