Lord Mahavir was neither Digambar nor Shwetambar.

• In Bhagwan Mahavir’s time, there was only one Jain sangh following his teachings.
• The division into Digambar and Shwetambar happened many centuries after Mahavir’s nirvana, due to historical, geographical and scriptural reasons, not because Mahavir taught two different paths.
• Both traditions accept Mahavir as the 24th Tirthankar and follow his core principles:

- Ahimsa (non‑violence) - Satya (truth) - Achaurya/Asteya (non‑stealing) - Brahmacharya (celibacy/chastity) - Aparigraha (non‑possessiveness)

So, saying “Mahavir was Digambar” or “Mahavir was Shwetambar” is not correct in a historical/Jain‑scriptural sense. He is the common Tirthankar of all Jains; the sects came later.
