    why to do samayik

    5 months ago 93

Samayik (सामायिक / समायिक) means “to stay in equanimity (समता में रहना)”. We do Samayik for the soul, not for show or formality.

    Main reasons to do Samayik:

    1. To develop equanimity (समता)

    - For some time (ideally 48 minutes) we try to see all beings with equal vision. - We reduce राग (attachment) and द्वेष (hatred). - This is the real purpose of Jain Dharma.

    1. To stop new bad karmas (कर्म बंध कम करना)

    - In Samayik we control body, speech and mind. - Less movement, less talking, less negative thinking → less हिंसा, less कषाय (anger, pride, deceit, greed). - So new paap‑karma binding is reduced.

    1. To purify our daily life (आत्मचिंतन और शुद्धि)

    - We calmly think about our actions. - We repent for mistakes (even small ones) and take care not to repeat them. - This slowly cleans the inner tendencies.

    1. Practice of Ahimsa in a higher way

    - During Samayik we consciously avoid hurting any living being by act, word or thought. - For some time we try to live like a sadhu/sadhvi in a small, simple way.

    1. Training for spiritual life

    - For householders, Samayik is like a small “monk‑life practice session”. - It prepares us for higher vows, more discipline and, ultimately, the path to Moksha.

    1. Scriptural and traditional duty

    - Samayik is counted among essential Jain duties (आवश्यक / शिक्षा-व्रत). - Both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions respect and practice it, even though method (विदि) and sutras recited may differ.

    1. Peace and clarity in the mind

    - Regular Samayik makes the mind lighter, calmer, and more stable. - A calm mind understands धर्म better and takes better decisions in daily life.

In short: We do Samayik to live for some time as a pure soul – in samata, without attachment and hatred – so that our karmas reduce and we move closer to liberation.
