at what age a boy can do abhishake in jain mandir

    5 months ago 78

In Jain Dharma, there is no fixed scriptural age written that “only after this age a boy can do Abhiṣhek in mandir.”

But in practice, it depends on:

    1. Type of Jain tradition

    - Śvetāmbara (Derāvāsī / Sthānakvāsī who visit derasar): - Many derasars allow boys to do jal-abhishek even from a young age (around 7–8 years or more), - But only if they are pure (śuddh) and follow the basic rules. - Digambar: - In many Digambar temples, only adult males who follow certain vrats (vows) are allowed to do pañcāmṛt abhiṣek on the mūl-nāyak. - Sometimes boys are allowed if they are of understanding age and follow rules properly, but this is decided by the mandir’s own niyam (rules).

    1. Basic conditions usually required

(These are more important than age): - Proper snān (bath) before coming. - Clean, washed clothes (usually white; no black in many places). - No leather items (belt, watch strap, wallet, purse, etc.). - No food in the mouth (not chewing, no chocolate, etc.). - Be in a state of śuddhi (purity) – for boys/men, not in a state of impurity (aśaucha) due to recent birth/death in family, etc. - Able to do abhishek with respect (no playing, shouting, running on vedi, etc.).

    1. Local mandir rules matter most

    - Each mandir trust / pujari / guru may have their own minimum age, like: - “Only after 8 years” - “Only after 12 years” - “Only if he has taken certain aṇuvrats or has janoi (yajñopavīt)”, etc. - So even if Dharma does not fix a strict age, you must follow your own mandir’s niyam.

    1. What you should do

    - Ask your mandir pujari, trustees, or your guru: “Mere bête / mujhe kis umar se abhiṣek karne ki anumati hai, aur kaunse niyam rakhne padenge?” - Follow exactly what they say, because they know: - local tradition (Digambar / Śvetāmbara), - level of strictness of that particular mandir.

Summary: Jain scriptures do not give a fixed age like “10 years” or “12 years”. A boy can do abhiṣek when:

    • He is of understanding age,
    • He can follow śuddhi and mandir rules properly,
    • And the local mandir management / guru permits it as per their niyams.
