What are best ways to eliminate karma

    5 months ago 179

In Jainism we don’t “cancel” karma in an instant. We:

    1) Stop new karma from coming (Samvara) 2) Remove old karma already bound (Nirjarā)

Both together slowly purify the soul.

Here are the main and best ways, kept very simple:

    ---

    1. Right Faith, Right Knowledge, Right Conduct (Ratnatray)

These three are the root method to eliminate karma:

    • Samyak Darshan (Right Faith)
    - Having clear, steady faith in: soul (jiva), karma, Tirthankars, and the path to moksha. - Avoiding blind beliefs and doubts about Jain tattvas.
    • Samyak Jnān (Right Knowledge)
    - Studying true Jain teachings (tattvas, karma theory, vows, guṇasthān). - Removing ignorance and wrong views.
    • Samyak Chāritra (Right Conduct)
    - Living daily life according to vows, self‑control, and non‑violence. - This is where karma truly stops and falls away.

Without these three, all other practices are weak.

    ---

    2. Non‑violence and Self‑control in Daily Life

Most karma comes from harming others and from strong passions.

    • Ahimsā in thought, speech, and action
    - Avoid anger, cruelty, hurting words, harsh behavior. - Be gentle with all beings: people, animals, even small creatures.
    • Control of speech
    - No lies, insults, gossip, heated arguments. - Speak less, speak truth, speak softly.
    • Control of mind
    - Reduce anger, pride, deceit, greed. - Watch thoughts; do not let them run wild.
    • Simple living (Aparigraha)
    - Less possessions, less desires, less show‑off. - The lighter the attachment, the lighter the karma.

This reduces āsrava (inflow of karma) and leads to samvara (stoppage).

    ---

    3. Practice Forgiveness and Equanimity

    • Kṣamā (Forgiveness)
    - Forgive those who hurt you; ask forgiveness for your own mistakes. - This directly weakens anger and hatred, which are heavy karmic causes.
    • Samatā / Samatva (Equanimity)
    - Stay balanced in happiness and sorrow, profit and loss, praise and insult. - When you don’t react with passion, new karma binds very lightly or not at all.

Even 10–15 minutes of pratikraman and inner reflection each day helps a lot.

    ---

    4. Austerities (Tapa) – For Burning Old Karma (Nirjarā)

Scriptures describe 12 kinds of tapa (austerities). In very simple terms:

    • External tapa (fasting, eating less, limiting tastes, simple living, etc.)
    • Internal tapa (repentance, humility, serving others, deep study, meditation, renunciation of attachments)

You don’t have to start with big fasts:

    • Occasionally skip one meal with proper resolve and prayer.
    • Reduce favorite tastes (like not taking sweets some days).
    • Do upavās, beyasans, āyambil, etc., as per your capacity and guidance.

Done with right attitude (not ego), tapa powerfully burns old karma.

    ---

    5. Daily Meditation / Kayotsarga / Swādhyāy

    • Dhyan (Meditation)
    - Sit quietly, keep the body still, watch the breath or repeat a mantra (e.g., “Om Namo Arihantānam”). - Let thoughts settle; try to remain just a knower & seer (gyātā–drashtā).
    • Kayotsarga
    - Steady, motionless posture, aware of the soul, letting go of body‑consciousness. - This reduces passions and helps nirjarā.
    • Swādhyāy (Scriptural Study)
    - Reading / listening to authentic Jain texts every day purifies vision and strengthens samyak darshan.

These practices slowly dissolve subtle karmas.

    ---

    6. Vows (Vrata) According to Your Level

    • For householders (Śrāvaks/Śrāvikās)
    - Take and actually live the Anuvratas (small vows): - non‑violence, truth, non‑stealing, celibacy within marriage, non‑possessiveness. - Add guṇa‑vratas and śikṣā‑vratas (limits on travel, consumption, etc.) when possible.
    • For monks/nuns
    - They follow Mahāvratas (great vows) to completely dry up karmic inflow and finish nirjarā.

Even small vows, kept sincerely, change karmic direction significantly.

    ---

    7. Stay in Good Saṅg (Company of Dharma)

    • Spend time with people who talk about dharma, not just gossip and material things.
    • Go to discourses, pūjas, pratikraman, satsang when you can.
    • Good company reduces passions; less passions = less karma.

    ---

    In one line

The best way to eliminate karma in Jainism is:

Develop Right Faith and Right Knowledge, live a disciplined non‑violent life, practice forgiveness and equanimity, and regularly do austerities, meditation, and self‑reflection.

Over time this stops new karma (samvara) and sheds old karma (nirjarā), leading the soul toward moksha.
