Why can’t I eat non vegetarian

    5 months ago 105

In Jainism, the main reason you cannot eat non‑vegetarian food is Ahimsa – complete non‑violence.

    Very simply:

    1. Every animal has a soul (jiva)

    - Just like you, animals feel pain, fear, and want to live. - Killing them for taste is considered very strong himsa (violence).

    1. Killing a 5‑sensed being gives very heavy karma

    - Animals and birds have 5 senses (like humans). - Hurting or killing them binds very heavy paap (bad karma) to the soul. - Jain Dharma teaches: if we want a pure soul and good future births, we must avoid this kind of himsa.

    1. Food should be taken with compassion, not cruelty

    - When we eat meat, fish or eggs, somewhere an animal has died or its life was destroyed. - Even if we did not kill it, by demanding and eating it, we support that killing. - A true Jain attitude is: “Let me live in such a way that the least number of beings suffer because of me.”

    1. Plant harm vs animal harm

    - Yes, even plants have life. But in Jainism: - Plants (1‑sensed) = lower level of life. - Animals (5‑sensed) = much higher, more developed life. - So, if some himsa is unavoidable to live, we choose the least harm: - Eating fruits, grains, above‑ground vegetables → less himsa. - Eating animals → very intense himsa. - That is why Jains are strictly vegetarian, and many are even more strict (no root vegetables, etc.).

    1. Effect on mind and spirituality

    - Non‑veg food is connected with violence, fear and bloodshed. - Such food is believed to make the mind more restless, aggressive, less compassionate. - For progress in sadhana, samayik, pratikraman, meditation, a soft, pure, vegetarian diet is best.

    1. Eggs are also not allowed

    - Even if people say “this egg is not fertile,” Jain view is: - Egg is a potential life. - It belongs to the non‑veg category and is avoided.

So, in Jain Dharma, you don’t eat non‑vegetarian food not because of culture or family habit only, but because:

    • You respect every living being as a soul.
    • You want to reduce violence as much as possible.
    • You want to protect your own soul from heavy bad karma.
