Do Jains believe in chakras
In Jainism, the classical doctrine does not talk about “chakras” the way they are described in many modern yoga / tantra / New Age systems.
1. What Jain scriptures focus on instead
Jain āgamas and main philosophical texts focus on:- Jīva (soul) and ajīva (non‑soul substances)
- Karma pudgala (karmic matter) binding to the soul
- Guṇasthāna (14 spiritual stages of the soul)
- Yoga mainly as activity of mind–speech–body, not energy centers in the spine
- Saṃvara–Nirjarā (stopping and shedding karma) through:
There is no central Jain doctrine of seven bodily chakras governing health, emotions, etc.
2. Where confusion sometimes comes from
- Some modern Jains learn about chakras from Hindu, Buddhist, or New Age yoga and personally believe or practice those ideas.
- That is their personal belief, not a core part of traditional Jain philosophy.
- In a few Jain works (like Siri Bhuvalaya), the word chakra is used in a different sense (as a pattern, diagram, or wheel-like structure), not as subtle-body energy centers.
3. Summary
- Classical Jainism: No doctrine of kundalini–chakra system in the body.
- Main emphasis: Purification of the soul by conquering passions and karma through right faith, knowledge, and conduct.
- Individual Jains today: May or may not personally believe in chakras due to influence from other traditions, but that is outside core Jain scriptural teaching.
