In Jain philosophy, Darshan and Gyan are two important ways of knowing the soul and reality.

1) Types of Darshan

Darshan means general perception / undifferentiated awareness before clear knowledge.

The main 4 types of Darshan are:

1. Chakshu Darshan

Perception through the eyes.

1. Achakshu Darshan

Perception without the eyes, through other senses or inner awareness.

1. Avadhi Darshan

Clair-perception of subtle material objects beyond normal senses.

1. Keval Darshan

Perfect, absolute perception of everything.

2) Types of Gyan

Gyan means knowledge / clear cognition.

The main 5 types of Gyan are:

1. Mati Gyan

Knowledge through the mind and senses.

1. Shrut Gyan

Knowledge through scriptures, words, and teachings.

1. Avadhi Gyan

Clair-knowledge of subtle material things beyond ordinary senses.

1. Manahparyay Gyan

Knowledge of the thoughts of others.

1. Keval Gyan

Infinite, perfect knowledge of all substances in all modes.

• Darshan = general perception
• Gyan = detailed knowledge
