    Jin darshan kriya

    one year ago 118

In Jainism, Jin Darshan Kriya refers to the devotional act of respectfully viewing (darshan) and worshipping (kriya) the images or idols (murtis) of the Tirthankaras (Jinas) in temples or at home. This practice is an important aspect of Jain daily rituals and spiritual discipline.

    Meaning:

    • Jin: Refers to the Tirthankaras, the conquerors of inner passions and liberated souls.
    • Darshan: Means ‘sight’ or ‘viewing’—here, it refers to beholding the image of the Jina with reverence.
    • Kriya: Means ‘activity’ or ‘ritual’—the act of performing religious rites.

    Purpose:

    • To cultivate devotion (bhakti) and humility.
    • To be reminded of the qualities of the Tirthankaras—omniscience, detachment, compassion.
    • To inspire oneself to follow their path of right faith, knowledge, and conduct.

How Jin Darshan Kriya is Performed:

    1. Purity: The devotee should be clean, both physically and mentally.
    2. Entering the Temple: Enter with humility, often reciting Namokar Mantra.
    3. Darshan: Stand or sit in front of the idol, focusing the mind on the qualities of the Jina.
    4. Offering: Sometimes fresh flowers, rice, or sandalwood paste may be offered as a mark of respect (without harming any living beings).
    5. Prayers: Recite prayers or stotras, such as the Navkar Mantra or other hymns.
    6. Circumambulation (Pradakshina): Walking around the idol, symbolizing respect and devotion.
    7. Prostration (Namaskar/Vandan): Bowing down fully or partially to express surrender and reverence.

    Significance:

    • Jin Darshan Kriya is not idol worship in the sense of seeking favors, but is a means to contemplate and emulate the virtues of the enlightened ones.
    • It helps to purify the mind, reduce ego, and foster spiritual progress.

    Key Jain Texts:

    • Rituals and their significance are described in Jain Agamas and other ritual manuals such as Jin Puja Vidhi.
    • The practice is emphasized in both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions, though the specific rituals may vary.
