Story of parshvanath
Bhagwan Parshvanath was the 23rd Tirthankar in Jain Dharma.
Short Story of Parshvanath
Parshvanath was born in Varanasi to King Ashvasen and Queen Vamadevi. From childhood, he showed deep compassion, detachment, and a spiritual nature.
One day, while visiting a forest, Parshvanath saw a digambar ascetic performing austerity. This inspired him greatly. He became aware of the temporary nature of worldly life and developed strong vairagya.
Later, he renounced his royal life and became an ascetic. Through severe penance, meditation, and purity of conduct, he destroyed his karmas and attained Keval Gyan.
He established the four vows:
- Ahimsa – non-violence
- Satya – truth
- Asteya – non-stealing
- Aparigraha – non-possession
These are known as the Chaturyama Dharma. Later, Bhagwan Mahavir expanded these into five vows by adding Brahmacharya as a separate vow.
Parshvanath is especially revered for his deep compassion and for teaching a practical spiritual path suited for householders and monks.
