Is giving up things you enjoy good for your karma
In Jain Dharma, giving up pleasures is not automatically good karma by itself.
What matters is the inner intention and whether the renunciation helps reduce attachment, desire, and violence in the mind, speech, and body.
Jain view:
- If you give up something with detachment, self-control, and spiritual purpose, it can help reduce karma.
- If you give up something for pride, display, fear, or to harm yourself, it does not bring the same benefit.
- Real progress in Jainism comes from reducing raga-dvesha (attachment and aversion), practicing ahimsa, sanyam (restraint), and aparigraha (non-possessiveness).
Simple meaning:
Enjoying something is not wrong by itself, but becoming dependent on it creates bondage. Giving it up sincerely can support karma-kshay and purification of the soul. So, in Jain Dharma, healthy renunciation is good when it leads to less attachment and more आत्म-शुद्धि.
