How to do padilehan of clothes
In Jain Dharma, padilehan / pratilekhan of clothes means carefully checking and cleansing the cloth so that no living beings are harmed, and to maintain ahimsa and purity.
How to do it
- Sit calmly in a clean place.
- Hold the cloth gently with full awareness.
- Inspect the cloth carefully on both sides:
- look for insects, tiny beings, dust, seeds, hair, or dirt - check folds, borders, sleeves, and inner layers
- Shake it very softly only if needed, and only in a safe, clean way.
- Remove visible insects or impurities with care, without harming them.
- Fold or keep the cloth properly after checking.
- Do it with mindfulness, reverence, and restraint, not in a rushed way.
Important Jain भावना
- The main purpose is raksha of jiva and self-discipline.
- Do it before wearing or before using the cloth, especially if there is a chance of small beings being present.
- Be gentle; the spirit is non-violence, not force.
Simple reminder
“Dekho, jivo ko bachao, aur vastra ko shuddh rakho.” (Inspect, protect living beings, and keep the cloth pure.)If you want, I can also give the traditional pratilekhan steps in simple Gujarati/Hindi terminology.
