What can I do to make up for lying
In Jain Dharma, lying is a violation of Satya Mahavrata and should be corrected with repentance, restraint, and truthfulness.
You can make up for it by doing these things:
- Accept it sincerely
- Admit to yourself that you acted wrongly without defending it.
- Seek forgiveness
- In your heart, ask forgiveness from the beings or people affected. - If appropriate and safe, openly apologize and correct the false statement.
- Confess honestly
- Tell the truth as soon as possible, especially if the lie harmed someone.
- Do Pratikraman
- In Jain tradition, Pratikraman is the proper practice of repentance for wrong conduct. - Reflect on the lie, feel remorse, and resolve not to repeat it.
- Practice self-restraint
- Be more careful in speech. - Speak only what is true, beneficial, and gentle.
- Do penance with sincerity
- Increase discipline in your vows, prayer, meditation, fasting, or other austerity according to your capacity and guidance.
- Protect future speech
- Before speaking, ask yourself: - Is it true? - Is it necessary? - Is it harmless?
In Jainism, the main correction is not just saying sorry, but changing the inner intention and future conduct. If the lie caused harm, the best atonement is to repair the harm and never repeat it.
