Can jain monks use mobile phones, electricity, vehicles, washrooms directly or indirectly.

    5 months ago 104

In Jain Dharma, monks are expected to follow very strict non-attachment and non-violence principles, so the use of these things is generally not permitted for ascetics:

    1. Mobile phones

    • Direct use: not allowed for monks.
    • Indirect use: also not considered appropriate, because it involves attachment, convenience, and often harm through modern communication systems.

    2. Electricity

    • Direct use: generally avoided by Jain monks.
    • Indirect use: also avoided as much as possible, because it supports worldly facilities and can involve subtle violence and dependency.

    3. Vehicles

    • Direct use: not allowed for monks.
    • Indirect use: generally not allowed, except in extraordinary situations such as severe illness, danger, or if traditional religious discipline or local monastic rules allow some limited exception.

    4. Washrooms

    • Jain monks normally live in a way that avoids regular worldly facilities.
    • Direct use of modern washrooms is usually not preferred.
    • They may use simple, minimal, and non-possessive arrangements only when necessary, according to tradition and practical need.
    • The emphasis is on minimum harm, purity, and non-attachment.

    Important point

There can be differences between Digambar and Shwetambar traditions, and also among different monastic lineages, but the general Jain ideal is:
    • avoid luxury
    • avoid dependence
    • avoid unnecessary use of modern facilities
    • maintain extreme discipline in ahimsa and aparigraha

So, in short: Jain monks generally should not use mobile phones, electricity, or vehicles, and modern washrooms are usually avoided or used only in a highly restricted, necessary way.
