prohibited foods and conditions for accepting alms for a digambara monk

    5 months ago 51

For a Digambara monk, accepting alms is governed by strict ahāra-vihāra discipline and complete ahiṃsā.

    Prohibited foods and offerings

A Digambara monk does not accept:
    • Any food with violence or injury involved in its preparation
    • Water that is not properly filtered and safeguarded
    • Food cooked specially for the monk
    • Food bought, ordered, or arranged on the monk’s behalf
    • Food with onions, garlic, intoxicants, meat, eggs, honey, or roots
    • Food containing many life-forms or harmed beings
    • Food that is stale, contaminated, or defiled
    • Food in which desire, praise, or attachment is involved
    • Food offered with improper intent or pride

    Conditions for accepting alms

A Digambara monk accepts alms only when:
    • It is given voluntarily
    • It is obtained without asking, demanding, or hinting
    • He receives only what is needed for nourishment of the body
    • The alms are collected according to the rules of gocarī
    • The giver is not disturbed, pressured, or harmed
    • The food is pure, suitable, and free from fault
    • Acceptance is done with equanimity, detachment, and mindfulness
    • The monk does not accept more than necessary

    Important Jain principle

For a Digambara monk, alms are accepted only to maintain the body for dharma-sādhana, never for taste, comfort, or enjoyment.

If you want, I can also give this in a simple table or in Hindi/Sanskrit-style terms.
