Is it better to donate prohibited food or throw it out?
In Jain dharma, the better choice is usually:
1. If the food is still pure, safe, and can be used by someone without supporting himsa, give it to someone who can use it. This avoids waste and respects aparigraha and daya.
2. If the food is prohibited because it is non-Jain, impure, or involves himsa, do not donate it as a “pious act.” Giving such food for religious use or to Jains would be improper.
3. If it cannot be used safely or appropriately, throw it out with minimum harm and disrespect. But do not intentionally waste edible food.
So the Jain principle is:
- Do not donate prohibited food as a meritorious offering
- Do not waste edible food if it can be used responsibly
- If unusable, dispose of it with care
In simple words: use it if it can be used without violating Jain values; otherwise discard it responsibly.
