Why do some monks ban others of the same sect just because they belong to different groups but same sect

    5 months ago 46

In Jain Dharma, this is generally not the ideal. Jain monkhood is meant to be guided by ahimsa, samata, aparigraha, vinaya, and nishpakshata. So if monks of the same sect reject or ban other monks only because they belong to a different group, that is usually due to human attachment, institutional control, lineage pride, or disagreement over discipline and ritual practice, not because such exclusion is the pure teaching of Jainism.

    Common reasons can be:

    • Different gaccha / lineages / traditions within the same sect
    • Rules of conduct or interpretation differences
    • Leadership disputes or authority over monastic communities
    • Pride in one’s own group
    • Fear of influence or criticism
    • Historical separation between groups that later became social boundaries

From the Jain point of view, such behavior reflects attachment and prejudice, which are obstacles on the path of purification. A true Jain monk should maintain equanimity, compassion, and respect toward all sincere साधु-साध्वी, even if there are doctrinal or disciplinary differences.

So the short answer is: Jainism does not support banning others out of sectarian hatred; when it happens, it is usually due to human and organizational causes, not the essence of Jain Dharma.

If you want, I can also explain this from the perspective of Digambar and Shwetambar traditions.
