Why are jain monks becoming influencers on Instagram
In Jain Dharma, some monks or Sadhus may appear on Instagram because they want to spread teachings like ahiṃsā, aparigraha, self-discipline, and soul-purification to more people in a modern way.
But traditionally, Jain monks are expected to follow very strict renunciation and humility. So if someone is acting like a social media influencer, that can be seen as unusual or even questionable from a classical Jain perspective, depending on the tradition and conduct involved.
In simple terms:
- If the purpose is preaching Jain values, it may be seen as a modern medium for dharma-prabhavana.
- If the purpose is popularity, fame, or self-promotion, that goes against Jain ideals of aparigraha and vairāgya.
So the key Jain question is not “Are they on Instagram?” but: “Is their conduct truly aligned with Jain restraint, humility, and liberation-oriented life?”
