Why jains don’t walk on grass
Jains avoid walking on grass mainly due to ahimsa — the principle of non-violence.
When we walk on grass, there is a chance of harming very small living beings that may be on it, such as insects, germs, or tiny forms of life. Jainism teaches that even the smallest life should be protected as much as possible. So walking carefully, especially avoiding unnecessary harm to plants and living beings, is part of Jain conduct.
In simple terms:
- Grass contains life or can shelter life
- Stepping on it may cause harm
- Jains try to reduce violence in all actions
This reflects the Jain value of maximum compassion and minimum harm in daily life.
