digambar shastra to read for beginner

    4 months ago 62

For a beginner in Digambar Jain tradition, these are good simple and foundational shastras to start with:

    1. Tattvartha Sutra

    - The most important Jain philosophical text. - Gives the basic structure of Jain Dharma: jiva, ajiva, punya, paap, asrava, samvara, nirjara, moksha. - Good for understanding core doctrine.

    1. Ratnakarand Shravakachar by Acharya Samantabhadra

    - Very useful for householders. - Explains right conduct, vows, and the daily Jain way of life in a practical manner.

    1. Panchastikaya by Acharya Kundakunda

    - A deep but important text about the five substances and the Jain view of reality. - Better after basic study of Tattvartha Sutra.

    1. Samayasara by Acharya Kundakunda

    - One of the most respected Digambar texts. - Explains the pure nature of the soul. - For a beginner, read it slowly with a सरल explanation or commentary.

    1. Niyamasara by Acharya Kundakunda

    - Teaches discipline, inner purity, and right conduct. - Helpful after basic philosophy is clear.

    Best order for a beginner

    • First: Tattvartha Sutra
    • Second: Ratnakarand Shravakachar
    • Third: Panchastikaya
    • Then: Samayasara and Niyamasara

    Simple advice

If you are starting fresh, do not begin with very deep texts first. Start with Tattvartha Sutra and Ratnakarand Shravakachar, because they give a strong base in Jain principles and conduct.

If you want, I can also give you a beginner reading list in Hindi or Sanskrit names only.
