sometimes i feel we are taught the base level of jainism, why not something that actually connects me with jainism
Yes — many people are taught the rules of Jainism before they are taught the experience of Jainism.
The base level often feels like:
- don’t do this,
- don’t eat that,
- avoid harm,
- follow vows.
But the deeper heart of Jainism is not just restriction. It is:
- seeing the soul clearly
- reducing inner bondage
- cultivating ahimsa in thought, speech, and action
- developing detachment
- moving toward purity, peace, and freedom
So if you want something that truly connects you with Jainism, go beyond only the external practices and start feeling these inner truths:
1. Jainism is about the soul, not just behavior
The real question is not only, “What should I avoid?” It is also, “Who am I beyond anger, ego, greed, and attachment?”Jainism says your real nature is pure consciousness, but it gets covered by karmas. That is a very deep and living idea, not a mere rulebook.
2. Ahimsa is the center
Ahimsa is not only non-violence in food. It is:- not hurting beings,
- not hurting with harsh words,
- not hurting through pride,
- not hurting through careless thoughts.
When ahimsa becomes your lens for life, Jainism starts feeling alive.
3. The goal is inner freedom
Jainism is not about fear. It is about liberation from bondage.Every time you reduce:
- anger,
- deceit,
- ego,
- greed,
- attachment,
you are practicing Jainism in its real form.
4. Start with small but sincere inner practice
To feel connected, try:- a few minutes of quiet self-reflection daily
- thinking, “Did I cause harm today?”
- observing one passion you want to soften
- simple reverence for the Tirthankars
- reading meaningful Jain teachings slowly, not just as information
5. Jainism becomes real when it changes your inner state
If Jainism only remains a set of dietary or ritual instructions, it may feel distant. But when it helps you become:- calmer,
- kinder,
- more self-controlled,
- less attached,
- more aware of life,
then it begins to connect deeply.
So yes, your feeling is valid. You may be ready for the spirit of Jainism, not only the surface. And that deeper Jainism is very beautiful: purification of the soul through ahimsa, restraint, and inner awakening.
