    Types of jains

    4 months ago 73

In Jain Dharma, “types of Jains” usually means the main traditions and communities within Jainism.

    Main traditions

    1. Digambar Jain

    - Follow the Digambar tradition. - Emphasize complete renunciation and non-possession. - Their monks generally practice nudity as a sign of total detachment.

    1. Shwetambar Jain

    - Follow the Shwetambar tradition. - Monks and nuns wear white clothes. - This tradition has several sub-traditions.

    Major Shwetambar sub-traditions

    1. Murtipujak

    - Worship Jain idols in temples.

    1. Sthanakvasi

    - Do not worship idols. - Practice meditation and scripture study in prayer halls called sthanaks.

    1. Terapanthi

    - A reformist branch of Sthanakvasi. - Strong emphasis on discipline, simplicity, and the guidance of one Acharya.

    Other common community groupings

Jains are also sometimes identified by regional or sectarian communities such as:
    • Oswal
    • Porwal
    • Shrimal
    • Agrawal
    • Khandelwal

These are community groups, not separate religions.

    In short

    The two main types are:
    • Digambar
    • Shwetambar

And Shwetambar has further branches like:

    • Murtipujak
    • Sthanakvasi
    • Terapanthi

If you want, I can also explain the difference between Digambar and Shwetambar in a simple table.
