    Life history of Lord Mahavir

    4 months ago 51

Lord Mahavir, also called Vardhaman Mahavir, was the 24th Tirthankar of Jain Dharma.

    Brief life history

    • Birth: He was born at Kundalpur near Vaishali in the kingdom of Mithila.
    • Parents: His father was King Siddhartha and mother was Queen Trishala.
    • Family: He was born in a royal Kshatriya family.
    • Signs at birth: Jain tradition says Queen Trishala saw auspicious dreams before his birth, which indicated the coming of a great soul.

    Childhood and youth

    • He was a very intelligent, calm, and compassionate child.
    • From early life, he showed deep detachment from worldly pleasures.
    • He was also called Vardhaman, meaning “one who increases” or “one who grows in virtue and strength.”

    Renunciation

    • At the age of 30, he gave up royal life, wealth, and family responsibilities.
    • He became a monk and took the path of spiritual austerity and self-realization.

    Spiritual practice

    • For many years he practiced:
    - Ahimsa - Tapas - Meditation - Self-discipline - Detachment
    • He endured great hardships with complete patience and courage.

    Keval Gyan

    • After deep penance and meditation, he attained Keval Gyan — perfect knowledge.
    • From that time, he was called Bhagwan Mahavir.

    Teachings

    Lord Mahavir taught:
    • Ahimsa — non-violence
    • Satya — truth
    • Asteya — non-stealing
    • Brahmacharya — celibacy / purity
    • Aparigraha — non-attachment

These are the core principles of Jain Dharma.

    Nirvana

    • Lord Mahavir attained Nirvana at Pavapuri in Bihar.
    • This happened on Kartik Krishna Amavasya, which is celebrated as Diwali by Jains.

    Importance

Lord Mahavir’s life is a supreme example of:
    • renunciation
    • compassion
    • self-control
    • inner victory over karma

He showed that liberation is achieved through pure conduct, discipline, and complete non-violence.
