Here is a short Jain story:
The Monk and the Mango Tree
A Jain monk was walking along a road in summer. He was very thirsty and tired. Near the path, he saw a mango tree full of sweet fruits.
A farmer was sitting nearby. He said, “Maharaj, these mangoes are ripe. Please eat one to refresh yourself.”
The monk gently replied, “Thank you, but I do not take fruits that involve harm to living beings or attachment to taste. I will drink only a little water if available.”
The farmer was surprised. He asked, “Why do you avoid such simple pleasure?”
The monk said, “A Jain साधु practices ahimsa and aparigraha. Even a small desire can increase attachment, and attachment can lead to harm.”
The farmer thought deeply. He understood that real strength is not in enjoying every desire, but in controlling the mind and living with compassion.
Moral: In Jain Dharma, true happiness comes from self-control, non-violence, and detachment.
