Difference between earth and hell time
In Jain cosmology, earth-world time and hell-time are not the same in experience.
Earth time
- This is the time experienced in the manushya loka.
- It is the normal human measure of days, months, years.
- Human life has a relatively balanced experience of pleasure, pain, activity, and rest.
Hell time
- In the narak gati (hell realms), time is experienced as extremely slow and painful.
- Suffering is so intense that even a very long period can feel unbearable.
- The lifespan in hell is much longer than in the human world.
- A being in hell does not experience time the way humans do; it is bound by its karmic condition.
Main difference
- On earth: time is experienced in a more normal, balanced way.
- In hell: time is experienced as prolonged suffering, and the stay there is far longer.
In Jain dharma, this shows that time itself is not the only factor — the state of the soul and its karma greatly affect how time is experienced.
