From a Jain point of view, you should not attach yourself rigidly to either label.

A Jain should follow:

• Ahimsa — no harm to living beings
• Aparigraha — limited possession and non-attachment
• Satya — honesty
• Asteya — not taking what is not given
• Right livelihood — earning in a way that does not cause violence or exploitation
• Dāna — charity and sharing

So, if by capitalist you mean earning, managing wealth, and being responsible, that can be acceptable if it is ethical and non-violent. If by socialist you mean concern for the poor, sharing, and reducing greed, that also fits well with Jain values.

But Jain Dharma does not ask you to become fully identified with any political or economic ideology. It asks you to:

• earn righteously,
• use wealth with restraint,
• avoid exploitation,
• and support compassion and welfare.

So the Jain approach is best described as:

ethical, restrained, non-violent, and charitable — not extreme capitalism or extreme socialism.
