Right way to start fasting journey.? Dis and don't. Good practices etc.

Starting a fasting journey in Jain Dharma should be done with discipline, humility, and inner awareness. In Jainism, fasting is not only about reducing food; it is mainly about reducing attachment, cleansing the mind, and strengthening self-control.

    Right way to begin fasting

    1. Start gradually

    • Do not begin with very long or difficult fasts suddenly.
    • Begin with simpler forms like:
    - Ekasana: one meal in a day - Biyasana: two meals with limits - Ayambil - Upvas only when your body and mind are ready

    2. Keep the intention pure

    • Fast for spiritual upliftment, not for show.
    • The goal is tapas and self-purification, not pride.

    3. Prepare mentally

    • Before fasting, practice:
    - calmness - forgiveness - reduced anger - reduced attachment
    • A peaceful mind makes fasting meaningful.

    4. Follow your tradition properly

    • In Jain practice, fasting methods may vary by Digambar and Shwetambar traditions.
    • Follow the guidance of your guru, sadhvi/sadhviji, or knowledgeable elder.

    5. Observe self-restraint

    • Along with food, reduce:
    - unnecessary speech - anger - laziness - entertainment - greed

    Good practices during fasting

    • Spend time in:
    - pratikraman - svadhyay - jap - meditation - reading Jain scriptures or stotras
    • Keep the mind clean and forgiving.
    • Stay simple in behavior and dress.
    • Drink or eat only as allowed by your specific vow.
    • Rest when needed, but remain जागरूक and disciplined.

    Do’s

    • Take fasting as a religious vow
    • Seek guidance before taking harder vows
    • Maintain ahimsa in thought, speech, and action
    • Stay truthful about your capacity
    • Break the fast properly according to Jain rules
    • Give importance to prayaschitta and forgiveness

    Don’ts

    • Do not fast to impress others
    • Do not force the body beyond safe limits
    • Do not become angry or egoistic while fasting
    • Do not speak harshly because of hunger
    • Do not compare your fasting with others
    • Do not break the fast carelessly
    • Do not neglect health if you are weak or ill

    Best attitude

A Jain fast should be done with:
    • vinay — humility
    • shanti — peace
    • samyam — self-control
    • vairagya — detachment
    • kshama — forgiveness

    Simple reminder

The real success of fasting is not only in staying without food, but in reducing inner passions like anger, pride, deceit, and greed.

If you want, I can also give you a simple beginner fasting plan in Jain style for 7 days or 30 days.
