I have been trying to forgive fir a ling time now but i feel i am not benefitting my partner my forgiving sgain and again because he has become used to doing wrong to me. What to do
In Jain Dharma, forgiveness is sacred, but forgiveness does not mean allowing repeated harm without wisdom.
What you are feeling is understandable. If someone keeps doing wrong again and again, then only forgiving outwardly is not enough. Jain teaching values:
- Kshama — forgiveness
- Samyama — self-control
- Vivek — right understanding
- Ahimsa — non-violence, including non-violence toward yourself
What to do
- Forgive in your heart, but do not ignore wrongdoing.
Jain forgiveness is to remove hatred, not to approve injustice.
- Set firm boundaries with calmness.
Speak truthfully and peacefully. In Jain way, this is satya with ahimsa.
- Stop enabling repeated wrong behavior.
If your forgiving is making the other person careless, then kindness must be joined with firmness.
- Protect your inner peace.
Do not keep absorbing hurt while pretending everything is fine. That is not true kshama.
- Practice pratikraman.
Reflect on your own emotions, words, and reactions. Ask for forgiveness for any anger, bitterness, or attachment that binds you.
- Choose detachment, not silent suffering.
Jain dharma teaches aparigraha and inner strength. You can care for someone without allowing them to misuse your goodness.
A simple Jain understanding
- Forgiveness removes revenge.
- Wisdom prevents repeated harm.
- Compassion does not mean being repeatedly wounded.
So, be gentle in heart, but clear in conduct. You may say with peace: “I forgive you, but I cannot accept this behavior again.”
That is also in harmony with Jain dharma.
