Which is considered more important swadhyay or worship in digamber jains
In Digambar Jain tradition, swadhyay is generally considered more important for inner spiritual progress, because it directly supports right knowledge (samyak jnana), self-reflection, and detachment.
Worship (puja / bhakti) is also important, but it is mainly seen as a supporting practice that helps in:
- developing devotion,
- remembering the qualities of the Arihants,
- purifying the mind,
- and preparing for deeper spiritual discipline.
Simple way to understand it:
- Swadhyay = study of Jain scriptures, self-analysis, and contemplation
- Worship = reverence and devotional practice
In Digambar Jainism, the highest emphasis is on the path of liberation, and among devotional and religious practices, swadhyay is often regarded as more spiritually transformative because knowledge leads the soul toward right understanding and right conduct.
So, in short:
For spiritual development: swadhyay is usually considered more important. For daily religious practice: worship is also valuable and supportive.
Both should ideally be practiced together, but swadhyay has the stronger role in inner upliftment in Digambar Jain thought.
