Can we use utensils if they were used for non jain cooking but washed
In Jain practice, it is generally avoided to use utensils for Jain cooking if they have been used for non-Jain food, even if washed.
Why?
- Jain food is meant to be prepared with pure intention and careful observance of ahimsa.
- If the utensil was used for non-Jain cooking, there may still be residual contamination from ingredients like onion, garlic, root vegetables, eggs, meat, or alcohol.
- For many Jains, especially in stricter observance, washing alone is not considered sufficient.
Common practice:
- If the utensil was used for completely vegetarian, Jain-acceptable food and washed very thoroughly, some households may accept it.
- But if it was used for non-Jain food or food with any prohibited items, it is usually not preferred for Jain cooking.
Best approach:
- Keep separate utensils for Jain food.
- If that is not possible, use utensils only after very careful purification, according to the family’s tradition and level of observance.
So, from a strict Jain viewpoint, it is better not to use them.
