Is it okay that I am a jain, but I am not a vegan/vegetarian?
In Jain Dharma, ahimsa is the central principle, so vegetarianism is strongly expected, and veganism is even more aligned with non-violence because it avoids harm connected with dairy and other animal exploitation.
So, strictly from Jain ethical ideals, being Jain while eating non-vegetarian food is not considered in harmony with Jain conduct. That said, many people may be at different stages in practice and understanding. If you are sincere, the Jain path encourages gradual movement toward less harm and deeper observance of ahimsa.
In simple terms:
- Non-vegetarian food: not in line with Jain principles.
- Vegetarian food: the minimum commonly expected in Jain life.
- Vegan food: even closer to the spirit of ahimsa.
If you want to live more fully as a Jain, the natural direction is toward vegetarianism, and ideally toward vegan discipline where possible.
