I'm super bad with ahimsa and other Jain practices. How can I get better to become more Jain?

    4 months ago 58

Becoming more Jain is a gradual path. The goal is not instant perfection, but steady reduction of violence, attachment, and anger with sincerity and awareness.

Here are simple ways to improve:

    1. Start with intent

Ahimsa begins in the mind. Before speaking or acting, pause and ask:
    • Will this harm any living being?
    • Is there a kinder way?
    • Am I acting from anger, greed, pride, or deceit?

    2. Practice small ahimsa

You do not need to become perfect overnight. Begin with practical steps:
    • Avoid unnecessary harm in food, speech, and behavior.
    • Be gentle with insects, plants, animals, and people.
    • Speak softly and truthfully.
    • Reduce harshness in daily life.

    3. Control the inner enemies

In Jainism, real progress comes by weakening:
    • Krodh — anger
    • Maan — pride
    • Maya — deceit
    • Lobh — greed

Whenever one of these rises, stop, breathe, and reflect.

    4. Keep simple vows

    Take smaller, realistic commitments:
    • No intentional harm
    • Less lying
    • Less anger
    • Less waste
    • Less attachment
    • More compassion

Even partial improvement is valuable if done with purity of heart.

    5. Do daily self-observation

At the end of the day, ask:
    • Where did I break ahimsa?
    • Where did I remain patient?
    • What can I do better tomorrow?

This kind of reflection is very Jain.

    6. Practice samayik and pratikraman

If you know these practices, they help deeply:
    • Samayik builds equanimity.
    • Pratikraman helps repent mistakes and purify the mind.

These are powerful tools for inner cleansing.

    7. Live with compassion

Try to see every being as a soul, not just a body. This naturally increases kindness and reduces cruelty.

    8. Be patient with yourself

Jain Dharma is a path of gradual purification. Falling short does not mean failure. What matters is:
    • awareness
    • repentance
    • effort
    • consistency

    A simple daily formula

    Try this:
    1. Wake up with a resolve for ahimsa
    2. Speak less, speak gently
    3. Eat and live with care
    4. Avoid anger and ego
    5. Reflect at night and repent mistakes

Most importantly: don’t aim to become “perfect” in one day; aim to become a little better every day.

If you want, I can also give you a very simple beginner Jain daily routine.
