Concept of astrology and effects of graphs in jainism

    4 months ago 67

In Jainism, astrology is generally understood within the framework of karma, not as an absolute force that controls the soul.

    1) Concept of astrology in Jainism

    • Jain texts describe the universe as filled with different kinds of beings, including Jyotish devas (celestial beings related to light, sun, moon, planets, stars).
    • Their movements and positions are part of the cosmic order.
    • In traditional Jain belief, these celestial influences may be seen as secondary conditions, but they do not override karma.

    2) Effect of planets / “grahas” in Jainism

If by “graphs” you mean grahas (planets):
    • Planets may be believed to have some indirect influence on worldly life.
    • But in Jain philosophy, the real cause of happiness, suffering, success, and failure is one’s own karma.
    • So astrology is not considered supreme or final in determining destiny.

    3) Jain view on destiny

    Jainism teaches:
    • Karma binds the soul
    • Karma gives results
    • Right conduct, austerity, self-control, and spiritual practice can reduce karmic bondage

So even if planetary positions are considered, a Jain should remember:

    • Purusharth (right effort)
    • Aachar (conduct)
    • Tap (austerity)
    • Samyak Darshan (right faith)

are more important than relying on astrology.

    4) Practical Jain attitude

    A Jain practitioner should:
    • not become overly dependent on horoscopes or predictions,
    • avoid fear based on planetary effects,
    • focus on karma purification, non-violence, truth, non-possessiveness, and self-discipline.

    Simple conclusion

In Jainism, astrology may exist as a worldly belief system, and grahas may have limited external influence, but karma is the main law governing the soul’s experience.

If you want, I can also explain this according to Digambar and Shwetambar understanding.
